Mounir Fatmi. The Machinery, 2009
Paradise Row is proud to present Mounir Fatmi, Shezad Dawood and Douglas White in Abu Dhabi Art Fair 2009.
Mounir Fatmi (Morocco, b.1970) and Shezad Dawood (U.K. b.1974) are two artists who each employ their own distinctive strategies to engage with the subject of how strands of meaning and cultural forms evolve and mutate as they flow through and into different cultural contexts.
Fatmi presents two major works; The Machinery (2009) is a wall-based piece comprising quotations from the Qu'ran and Hadiths on the subjects of God and Beauty, painted in beautiful calligraphic forms onto a thirty circular saw blades. Les Monuments (2008) comprises a pile of white construction 'hard hats, each one bearing the name of a seminal philosopher who has played a key role in the construction our modern world-view. The work attempts to give material form to the world of ideas and ideologies that underpin our lives.
Shezad Dawood presents works from his 99 Names of God series that physically articulate points of synthesis between Eastern and Western cultural traditions through the specific histories of the materials and ideas utilized in each work. Similarly, a new series of black and gold paintings, simultaneously take the geometric form of the Ka'b and Malevich's Black Square as their starting point.
In the Signature section, young British artist Douglas White (U.K. b.1977) presents an installation created in Abu Dhabi using local materials, that forms part of his increasingly celebrated Dark Moon series that employs wax, light and found materials and is driven by White's core compulsion to employ discarded elements in the creation of strangely compelling and poetic works.
